TIPS AND TRICKS TO GETTING A BALL PYTHON TO EAT

Ball pythons are known for their gentle and docile nature, but they can also be stubborn when it comes to feeding. If you have a ball python that is refusing to eat, it can be a frustrating and stressful experience. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips and tricks to help you get your stubborn ball python to eat.

Check the Temperature and Humidity

Ball pythons are cold-blooded creatures that require specific environmental conditions to thrive, including the correct temperature and humidity. If your ball python's enclosure is too cold or too dry, it may be causing them to refuse food. Make sure that the temperature in your ball python's enclosure is 90°F on the warm side and 80°F on the cool side. Additionally, the humidity in the enclosure should be kept between 50-60%.

Offer the Right Size of Prey

Offering the right size of prey is crucial when it comes to getting your ball python to eat. If the prey item is too big, your ball python may be intimidated and refuse to eat. On the other hand, if the prey item is too small, it may not provide enough nutrition for your ball python. A good rule of thumb is to offer prey that is approximately the same size as the thickest part of your ball python's body.

Try Different Types of Prey

Some ball pythons can be picky eaters and may prefer one type of prey over another. If your ball python is refusing to eat, try offering a different type of prey. For example, if you've been offering rats, try switching to african soft fur rats or mice. Live prey can also be more appealing to some ball pythons than frozen-thawed prey.

Use Assist Feeding as a Last Resort

If your ball python has not eaten for an extended period and is losing weight, you may need to resort to assist feeding. This involves placing the prey item in your ball python's mouth manually. It is essential to seek the guidance of a veterinarian or an experienced reptile keeper before attempting assist feeding, as it can be dangerous if not done correctly.

In conclusion, getting a stubborn ball python to eat can be a challenging and frustrating experience. However, by following the tips and tricks outlined in this post, you can increase your chances of success. Remember to be patient, and if all else fails, seek the guidance of a veterinarian or an experienced reptile keeper.
